VCU firsts

We aren’t afraid to pave the way. To name a few firsts …

VCU is located in the heart of Richmond, the capital of Virginia since 1779. We are just an easy day trip away from Virginia Beach, Colonial Williamsburg, the Blue Ridge Mountains or Washington, D.C.

VCU enrolls more than 31,000 students; nearly 24,000 are undergraduates.

VCU Athletics

VCU is an NCAA Division I and Atlantic 10 Conference member. No football team, but there’s baseball, basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, soccer, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. Oh, and you may have heard: Our men’s basketball team made it to the Final Four in 2011.

VCU offers academic programs in the:

Study abroad

The university offers four different programs to study abroad in places like Beijing, Barcelona, England and Greece. You can travel to the Caribbean on a two-week faculty-led summer program or spend a whole year living with a host family in Ghana. Check out the Education Abroad blog.

Interdisciplinary learning

We encourage interdisciplinary learning at:

  • Fortune 500 headquarters based in Richmond
  • Art galleries and museums (more than 50 in the city)
  • Government offices at the state capitol building
  • Internships in Washington, D.C., New York, Seattle — or wherever you find an exciting opportunity

Our campuses

In addition to our campuses in downtown Richmond, VCU also has campuses in Northern Virginia; Doha, Qatar; Charles City County, Va; and Charlottesville, Va.

Campus safety

The VCU Police Department — consisting of more than 90 sworn personnel — ensures that our campus is safe for students, faculty, staff and visitors. Officers patrol on mountain bikes, in cars and on foot. VCU also recently contracted with international security firm G4S to provide additional security personnel. These officers patrol campus in marked G4S vehicles with flashing yellow lights.

RamSafe, our security escort service, provides walking or riding escorts in the evening for members of the university community traveling to and from campus-related activities.

There are more than 350 Emergency Reporting Telephone Systems throughout campus that connect directly with the department’s Emergency Communications Center. Look for red wall phones or yellow call boxes with a flashing light above them.

Our dining halls serve more than the average sandwich. Options like sushi, stir-fry, fresh salads, pastas and homemade desserts keep the dining experience exciting, while coffee shops located throughout campus in bookstores and libraries provide a quick pick-me-up. Our students like their lattes — the Starbucks in James Branch Cabell Library is ranked in the top 10 stores in the state.

Fitness facilities

Students currently have free membership to two fitness facilities: Cary Street Gym and the MCV Campus Recreation and Aquatic Center. The Cary Street Gym, which opened in spring 2010, features two heated indoor pools, a rock-climbing wall, racquetball courts, an 18,000-square-foot fitness center with cardio, machine-assisted and free-weight equipment, and much more.

We have two libraries: the James Branch Cabell Library — home to the largest book art collection in the Southeast and the largest popular culture and comic art collection in the state — and the Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences, which houses the largest medical collection in the state.

Outing Rental Center

VCU’s Outing Rental Center offers low rental rates on all the equipment you might need to create your own outdoor adventure. Rent a sleeping bag, tent and canoe and be on your way!

Student organizations

VCU’s student organizations represent a vast range of interests — whether you want to explore student government, Greek life, recreational or religious activity, community service or student media. We even have a Quidditch Club, in which students play the sport from the world of “Harry Potter.” If you can’t find the perfect club to suit you, create your own!
